at the economy, the looming fiscal cliff. my partner, tyler mathisen kicks it off for us at the new york stock exchange. >> thank you very much. it is a quiet day down here at the new york stock exchange where the major averages are not really doing very much at this hour. let's take a look. the industrials are down 7 2/3 points at 13,163. nasdaq a little bit lower also in percentage terms. also a percentage at 29891.48. 2 3/4 right now at 1416.74. it would appear the markets are watchfully waiting to see what comes out of washington, if anything. of course, mr. boehner has gone back to his home in ohio for the weekend. the president is on duty at the white house. there are phones, as mr. boehner said, in southern ohio where he lives. if there are any developments, the two gentlemen certainly will be able to get in touch with one another. meantime, there are some individual stock stories of interest at this hour. and one of them concerns facebook. be a facebook lockup expires today and 150 million shares will open up on the market. the last time we had a lockup expiration many expected to see

happening at sandy hook elementary school on dickerson drive. this is coming to us from one of our affiliates. police are reporting a number of injuries. the nature of the injuries at this point are unclear. we're going to be checking that throughout the morning. state police sources say that one person is dead. earlier reports of a second shooter. that has not been confirmed at this point. a few more reports, apparently the shooting was reported shortly after 9:40 a.m. this morning. police reported that a shooter was in the -- apparently in the main office. >> which is hard to tell with this image that we're looking at because that's sort of bird's-eye view of the school layout doesn't show where that is. we should mention that one of the tv stations that has been reporting on this was told by a witness that she saw two children, one with a bloody face and the other with what appeared to be a hand injury. again, that coming in to news 8, one of the local stations in the area. >> that falls in step with one of the reports that we're hearing, that a person in one of the rooms has, q

secretary leon panetta announcing that the u.s. is sending patriot missiles and troops to turkey to deal with the growing threat from the neighboring syria. 400 troops will join nato forces and stand ready to act if syria intends to unleash chemical weapons. fox's leland vittert is in our middle east bureau. leland, just a few days ago the head of nato said the assad regime is about to collapse. why deploy these troops now? >> reporter: it really has to do with showing solidarity with the turks who are clearly very scared and timing comes a couple days after we learned that the syrians were mixing chemical weapons to possibly use. so this is the united states and nato's way of really get being behind turkey, a close ally saying we support you. the secretary of defense was quick to point out that the patriot missiles are just that, defensive weapons that will be put down along the syrian border to protect syria, protect turkey from attacks by syrian jets or scud missiles that would fly in but that is not exactly the whole story. the patriots could be easily programmed and put in a no-fly

shooting. police told us a number of people have been shot at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, about 60 miles north of new york. first calls coming into police around 9:40 local time this morning. children were being evacuated, the schools in the area all on lockdown. now, we have learned that the shooter is dead. we are also hearing multiple local reports of fatalities. i want to go to our cnn's jason carroll for the very latest. first of all, outline if you will how many people we know are dead, who has been killed, and who has been injured. >> well, first of all, let's go back to the beginning. we started to receive reports at about 9:40 a.m. that's when police, suzanne, reported that a shooter was in the, quote, main office of the school. at that point we had also heard a report that a person in one room had numerous gunshot wounds. this coming to us from one of our affiliates there. our susan candiotti has confirmed through one of her sources that someone has been shot, the alleged gunman involved in the shooting at the school, and that two weapons were recov
